Physical Development, Ages 15 to 18 Years

Overview

In females:

  • Most have had their first menstrual period by age 15. And most have completed the rapid growth spurt that usually occurs during puberty.
  • Other early changes of puberty, such as the growth of pubic hair and breasts, have also occurred. Breast development is usually complete about 4 years after breast buds signal the start of puberty.

In males:

  • The growth spurt tends to reach its peak sometime during the early to mid-teen years.
  • The growth of facial hair, penis and testicles, and pubic hair continues during the late teen years.

These and other physical changes vary greatly from person to person. These changes may cause distress for teens whose bodies don't match with their gender identity.
